Furnace Replacement

In this age of high energy prices, it is necessary to consider how productive your furnace is compared to its cost. A furnace replacement may be the best solution if you find that your San Diego home is no longer keeping heat at the same level as it has in the past, or if it is taking much longer to fill your home with warm air than it ever had before. Furnace replacement can also benefit San Diego homeowners by reducing monthly heating bills if a model that conserves energy is installed.

Good furnaces and heat pump air handlers usually have a lifespan of twenty years, but every once in a while a furnace may break down sooner than expected, generally due to poor maintenance or a defect in the model. A furnace replacement is the most convenient way to be rid of a malfunctioning furnace that requires extensive furnace repair, or move to a modern, efficient heating system.

Furnace Replacement Instructions

  1. Begin the furnace replacement by powering down the energy source to your old furnace before removing it.

  2. When connecting the new furnace make sure that you always use mastic to seal all of the joints. Foil tape is another option but duct tape should never be used.

  3. Connect flexible air ducts to the supply plenum and the return plenum. These plenums are rectangular metal boxes where the duct connects to the air handler.

  4. Make sure that the air duct does not get bent because that will greatly reduce the air flow.

  5. Under the air handlers you should install an overflow pan.

  6. Extend a 3/4 inch drain pipe out from the pan to a visible location outdoors.

Keep Energy In Mind

Since your new unit will most likely be more energy efficient than any old furnace, it is important to replace old circuit breakers once the old furnace has been replaced with a new model. The new equipment will use energy differently and in order to avoid blowing a circuit after the furnace replacement is completed, don't forget to replace the circuit breakers. This might be a good time to invest in efficient breakers that have smaller ratings. Make sure to optmize energy usage by replacing the old one with a right sized furnace for your San Diego home.
